Staff Spotlight: Matthew Brady
The Staff Spotlight series was introduced to both recognise the hard work of our staff who go above and beyond throughout the year, as well as introduce them to the wider school community, outside of their respective stream or department.
Each issue of Le Bulletin will shine a light on our talented and supportive staff from across the entire school (Leadership, Early Years, Primary, Secondary, French Stream, International Stream, Administration) with some “fun facts” and a Q&A that will allow the community to get to know them on a more personal level.

Q&A
1. How long have you worked at FIS?
I am finishing my 4th year at FIS.
2. In a few words, what’s the most rewarding thing about working at FIS?
The students; engaged, curious, responsible, and respectful.
3. What is the best thing that has happened to you this year (at FIS)?
My major highlight from this year was undoubtedly the 4e trip to Chiangmai in late January, where we took 83 students and 7 staff on a week-long experiential learning and service trip to the area, engaging in issues related to population and migration; development; and culture.
4. What hobbies / interests do you have?
Water sports. I dive and swim, primarily. Trying to organize a marine research diving trip for the students for later this year!!
5. Best thing about living in Hong Kong?
The diversity.
6. Favourite type of food or cuisine?
Pretty much everything, although Thai is something I can eat everyday.
7. Favourite book or movie?
I can’t say I have a single favorite book – I read a lot, both fiction and non-fiction, and many books have influenced my ideas and thinking, whether it is relevant towards my teaching or outlook on life and society. If I had to pick, I would probably say the following:
- Fiction – The Quiet American, Graham Greene OR Life and Fate, Vasily Grossman
- Non-fiction – too many to choose from!
8. If you could pick any superpower, what would it be and why?
Aquaman – to be able to talk to all the creatures in the sea!
