Battle of the Books 2024
Our school had the privilege of hosting and participating in the semi-finals of the Battle of the Books on May 3rd, 2024, at our beautiful TKO campus. The Battle of the Books is a competitive event between schools that tests students’ memory and love for reading by engaging with 20 books from different genres. Originating in Hong Kong in 1999, this event promotes team-building and fosters friendships not only within schools but also between schools. Personally, this competition has allowed our team to form valuable new friendships. The participating schools this year included GSIS, DSC International School, and Nord Anglia International School.
This year, our team consisted of TKO students, BPR French Stream students, and International Stream students, making it a unified OneFIS team. Even those who didn’t make the team attended the battle as enthusiastic supporters, cheering on their friends. While some schools brought smaller teams composed of their top performers, we brought the maximum of 12 students to diversify our team and give everyone an opportunity to participate. Including our supporters, we had a total of 24 participants. Thanks to our team’s efforts, we achieved an impressive score of 104 points, securing second place in the semi-finals. We were narrowly defeated by GSIS, who emerged as the winners.
Although the FIS team didn’t bring home the championship title, this club successfully accomplished its goal of creating a community of like-minded reading enthusiasts, and they performed exceptionally well. They demonstrated remarkable performance under time constraints and provided mutual support throughout the competition. A big round of applause goes to the team, our teacher supporter, Mr. Wilson and our wonderful librarian Ms. Rebuffet-Liu.
Once again, we extend our gratitude to the student team leaders, Olwen Brown, Jiya Mahapatra, Louise Arbey, Rose Chupin, Sarah, Erin, and Alan, for their incredible hard work, creativity, and leadership.
