French Schools Forest Challenge Continues to Grow!
Throughout the year, we have seen students across our four campuses engaged in Climate Action projects both large and small. February 2023 marked the launch of student-led Climate Action projects and we are delighted to report one of their significant achievements, the French Forest!
Project: French Forest
What is the French Forest?: In partnership with EcoMatcher, FIS students have arranged for the planting of more than 2,500 trees in Thailand, our very own French Forest! Our young people created a number of fundraising activities to fund the purchase of the trees, which cost $28HKD each.
Who is our partner planting the trees: EcoMatcher, a certified B corporation, plants trees and complete forests with vetted foundations and NGOs from around the world specialised in planting trees. Through technology, EcoMatcher knows everything about every tree offering total transparency. Every tree can be virtually visited. Companies use trees for corporate gifting, rewards, loyalty, and employee engagement programs.
Which UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) does it address: SDG 15 – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. And SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
How does it help?: Planting new trees is a simple and effective way to increase the “carbon sink”–in other words anything that absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases. As trees grow they remove carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas, from the air which is stored in the trees and the soil. In turn trees release oxygen into the atmosphere.
We are very proud of our students and their commitment to Climate Action and look forward to watching the French Forest continue to grow.
