New staff: Part III

Issue 68: 21/6/2024 Strategic Objective: From the Principal

As we come towards the end of the school year, with reports for years 7,8,9,10 & 12 looming next week, I am delighted to present to you two more staff who will be coming to join us at FIS in the growing part of the school next year:

David O’Mahony

My name is David O’ Mahony, I will be working as a French teacher and Assistant Leader of World Languages. I can’t wait to start my journey at French International School!

I was born in Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands but grew up in Ireland. I come from a big Irish family. There are seven of us in total: my mother, my father, my three brothers  – including my twin – , and finally, my sister. I love spending time with my family and our dogs in the Irish countryside (when I get the chance!)

Having started my education at University College Cork, Ireland, where I studied a degree in Commerce and French, I then spent time in France studying a Master of Lettres Modernes in Rennes, before moving into education. After two years teaching in Ireland and three years in London, I worked as Head of MFL for 5 years in the Middle East before joining the team at FIS.

My main interests in life are literature, music and keeping fit. In my personal life, the most exciting things are so often hearing a new song, visiting a new museum or discovering alternative ways of thinking. I’m always filled with enthusiasm by such experiences and it’s this enthusiasm for discovery that I then try to bring to my teaching.

At FIS, I’m hoping to provide an engaging French education to all students, showing students the exciting worlds into which the French language can lead. This can involve learning through games as well as introducing students to authentic sources of French language and culture. I do also believe in high standards and feel a responsibility to help each student reach his or her individual potential.

Sophia Lou

Hello, FIS community! My name is Sophia Lou, and I am thrilled to join you as a Chinese teacher in August 2024. My teaching adventure, which began in Hong Kong in 2016, has been an exciting  journey full of joy.

I am an explorer at heart, blending my love for traveling, the outdoors, and reading—imagine Indiana Jones with a library card! The intriguing quirks of different cultures fascinate me. Traveling and reading help me broaden my horizons and fuel my curiosity about the amazing diversity our planet offers. I used to be a football fanatic rooting passionately for my favorite club until the beloved players left. Now, the World Cup keeps my excitement alive!

I believe wholeheartedly in nurturing student well-being and encouraging lifelong learning, celebrating the unique brilliance of each student. The shared values at FIS resonate deeply with my own educational philosophy, and I’m excited to join a community that values strong bonds between students and teachers. I can’t wait to contribute to and flourish within this inspiring and supportive environment!

I am eager to bring my passion for teaching to FIS and share the beauty of Chinese with everyone. Let’s embark on this amazing journey through the wonders of Chinese language and culture together.

Can’t wait to meet you all in August 2024!
