On Friday 19 May at 3:40pm, FIS students taking MPS (scientific methods and practices) met an investigating police officer from Paris along with Christian Baron who is responsible for the police at the French Consulate in Hong Kong.
Students were able to get to the heart of an investigation through a presentation showing the process of a real police case which had already been solved, judged and categorized.
This meeting followed on from the interdisciplinary work done during the year with the three MPS teachers (Mrs Heuzard, Mrs Guiard and Mr Oganessova). They put forward a fictitious case for students who presented their outcome orally in pairs to the whole MPS group. The teachers worked with the students on the scientific research (ballistics, digital and genetic fingerprinting, chemical analysis by gas chromatography, cryptology…)
The presentation on 19 May enabled the real police investigation professionals to get involved. Students were immersed in a real case so they could understand how an inquiry is led, how science helps to determine circumstances surrounding the event in question and identify the perpetrator(s).
The students now certainly understand a police investigator’s job. They showed themselves to be very interested and engaged and asked lots of questions.
